When it comes to cycling, why is functional threshold of power so important?
Regardless of your current level of fitness, knowing your FTP will Allow you to train with precision at different training capacities.
Since the level of fitness in a group of individuals can be very different, it is very important to know individual FTP to be able to train everyone in the group effectively.
If each individual cyclist in a group knows their FTP, multiple power training zones can be assigned to different ranges surrounding the FTP. (these ranges will vary depending on individual differences in physical capacity)
Training zones can be established unique to individual FTP within a group.
If training zones can be established then we can also assign a color to each of these training zones which would represent a specific intensity or sustained volume of power.
If we have color zones established then all we need is the ability to enter individually specific FTP into every bike computer to allow every participant to ride in their own specific color zones that are appropriate for their current physical abilities.
If we have this type of capability on a bike then everyone in the group regardless of their physical ability is able to ride in the same color zone collectively, while potentially all doing different volumes of work that are specific to each one of their individual training zones.
Then all we would need is a coach to be able to guide a group of participants through these color zones with some sort of intentional training purpose.
If we can do that, then everyone in the group is getting the exact same workout that is appropriate for their current level of fitness.
It’s called Coach by Color!!
Thank you Team ICG for creating an indoor cycle that effectively combined the use of a very precise power meter and coach by color training zones.
Thank you for giving us an indoor cycle that allows us to create fun, unique cycling experiences while also training as efficiently as possible.
